The Hands-On Language Program
Experiential immersion opportunities for all ages
to learn world languages
Languages are best learned by doing. Therefore, The Hands-On Language Program is proud to offer a 'French through cooking' program. The instructor teaches students a recipe, speaking entirely in French in a full immersion environment. Because cooking is such a hands-on activity, students rapidly pick up words and expressions, and soon start using them themselves. While cooking, language becomes very visual and meaningful, because words correspond to a task or an item immediately used or performed, and easily acted out by the teacher. As a consequence, students are more at ease from the start, and are less intimidated by the immersion setting.
Best of all, there is a great reward at the end: some delicious food to eat. This has many benefits:
Our French through cooking classes are available in different formats:
This format is the same as above, the only difference is that you open your class (and therefore your kitchen) to other students, that you may not know. This allows you to decrease the cost per student if you find other people who want to follow the class.
If you choose this option, you must start the process at least two weeks before class starts. We will advertise the class and if other students want to sign up, we will put them in touch with you so that you can work out buying ingredients.
You can find information about the fees for classes on the "Fees and terms of service" page. When looking at the fees, keep in mind that buying the ingredients is your responsibility... but of course, you get to keep a delicious meal!
Choices of recipes can be discussed by email or phone. You will also have to decide if you want the eating time to be part of class or after the teacher has left, and whether you want cleaning time to be part of class (in which case all students and teacher will help) or after (in that case, the teacher does not help for the cleaning, but it leaves more time for instruction).
All classes can be held occasionally as a workshop or regularly as a course.
All classes can be a combination of different hands-on activities, for example cooking and storytelling, or cooking and culture club, cooking and games, etc.
In all cases, contact us for further information and to book your next class!
